 Week 7

Can you believe it? This is our last week of  ski season.

We travel to Lander (South Pass) for our last meet of the year this Saturday 2-12-22

Predict a 6:45AM Bus load with getting on the road by 7:00AM and a later time home.

As far as we know the start time for the race is 1:00PM

We will not be taking or entering any Novice skiers.  This is a long bus ride, a long day and worthy of the long race.  If you go be prepared for a very technical long 3.5km course.  It is a Freestyle race.

We had a bunch of snacks left over from our trip to Casper, we will use them up going to Lander.

Look for more information by mid week.

-----------

If you are not going to the meet.  Make sure to get all of your gear out of the shed on the last day you ski.  Friday after waxing we will pick up and put away our mess from the season.

---

Practice this week is regular practice.  Hopefully we have busses and the weather cooperates.  Friday is a wax day for those going to the meet.  It really does your skis good to get your skis ready to race.

---

We had some great trails, fast snow and great racers on Saturday in Casper.  As I have told the team the Casper trails were originally designed and built by my (Coach Hamann) father.  I could feel him smiling at all the skiers on Saturday.

News Flash! Pole Mountain Shuffle was invaded by costume wearing Middle School Nordic skiers.

The 2022 Pole Mountain Shuffle will go down in history as the most fun, best attended and fastest Medicine Bow Nordic Association 's fun race in a very long time.  Personally, from my coaches eyes I love the fun energy this event brought our kiddos.  They proved they can ski hard as well as get a little goofy!

I had an amazing encounter with a Citizen participant of this race. A mature man (mature like Coach Hamann).  He made a point to stop me looking for this teams coach. (What? I did not look like a coach in my Tigger pajamas?) He wanted to make sure the coach knew how much he enjoyed our team! He called us really good young skiers.  He then told me how polite and courteous and encouraging we were on the trail.  Parents, skiers, LMS you should be proud of all your little crazy dressed up critters!

On to this week:  Saturday, February 5, 2022 we travel to Casper!  Be warned this is an early bus load and departure.  (6:45 load, bus leaves at 7AM)  Watch for more information through the emails and Remind.  Requirements to travel with the team. 1) 9 Practices,  2) Passing your classes,  3) Physically healthy,  4) By Transportation requirements, we will have to wear a mask while on the bus.  This is a Freestyle Race-  meaning any ski technique is allowed.  There will be a 3KM and a Novice event.  If you get on the bus you will ski in the race.

Practices this week!  Cross your fingers that we have enough bus drivers  to get us to Happy Jack.  Other than that we ski as usual, Monday - Thursday.  Friday will be a travel team meeting, and wax day.

A huge thank you note:  One of our team parents Matt Burkhart has been using his snow machine and borrowed equipment and packing the  LMS practice field  on the days we have needed to be in town. It has been a huge blessing to work technique and have quality practices close to home.  Please thank him if you see him.

Awards for this week:

10K Glutton For Punishment Award:  Jackson Craine

Team Leadership Award:  Entire 8th Grade

Heart Award: Jumanna Ahmed

Most Improved Technique: Audrey Olson

Sportsmanship Award:  The entire Team on Saturday!

Friday, January 21, 2022

We have a very busy next 3 weeks.  3 Saturdays, 3 meets.  Hold on here we go!

January 29, 2022  Pole Mountain Shuffle

5KM only, skiers may choose skate or classic.  It would be great if all skiers decided to ski this event.  You don't have to be fast, it is a huge accomplishment to ski a longer race.  COSTUMES are highly encouraged. (footy pajamas, capes, tutus.. ) Lets make this a fun day!  The rest of the season gets sort of serious.

There is a google doc shared to the ScoutNordic  email, please take a look and decide on what technique your skier will be doing for this race.  If Your name is not on the list please add it.

Also since this race is a MBNA race we need to have waivers for racers signed. Watch for this.  Signed waivers must be in a coaches hand to be able to ski this race,  There is no entry fee. Thx

Parents we need a few helpers.  This is a race for anybody to ski.  Parents, this might be a time for some friendly competition with your child.    Registration for non ski team members is on the MBNA website.

February 5, 2022  Casper

February 12, 2022  Lander

These are long travel days but worth it!  Watch for race info.

Starting this week we shift to skate skis for those who have them.  Keep coming if you have only classic skis.  The next 2 middle school races are what we call Freestyle (All ski techniques allowed.)

We are being very firm about following the School districts policy on wearing masks on longer rides in the bus. If your skier has a problem wearing a mask to our local ski trails he or she may want to think hard about traveling to Casper and Lander.  Parent transportation is very tricky and not encouraged.  To many variables in getting to the race course and finding our team.

Practice days for the next three weeks.  Please stick to your assigned days.  If you need to change days or make up days you need to contact a coach before practice.  (Not 10 minutes before.) Unexpected kiddos will not be allowed on the bus.  We have to know who is traveling to practice.  Unexpected skiers take up bus space for those expected.

Week 4

WOW! We had some great fun at our home meet. Thank you parents who helped out. We cannot do this type of an event without you! Our Scout Nordic Team did a great job on the trails! Some skied really fast, some finished a race for the first time. All did their team proud!

As I observed over the past week I need to mention a few standout skiers:
The TRUE GRIT AWARD goes to Alex Specht. He skied the race placing in the top 10 and has only been on skis 3 days ever!
The BEST DRESSED AWARD goes to Flynn Arnold. The fancy flag shorts he had on over his race tights helped him ski very fast!
The HEART AWARD goes to James Specht for fighting through a very tough week and still skiing like a Champ.
The LEADERSHIP AWARD goes to Alex Burkhart for taking the lead during practice and helping out his group.
The WAX LIKE A CHAMP AWARD goes Sawyer Layson.

We have had a bunch of others really step up and create team unity. A huge shout out to those 8th graders who organized Friday night waxing.

 Now to this week.
  Monday - No School-No Practice
Tuesday- Thursday Practice at Happy Jack Home by 5:30PM
Friday- No Waxing but we will ski in the park, Done by 5PM
This week will be a Classic Ski week. Next week we shall shift to Skating for those of you wanting to skate.

Parents, if you took pictures of your skiers racing, we would love a few for the yearbook. Send them to Coach Hamann or message them to the Scout Nordic Facebook page.

There are a few pair of race tights left. They are 35$.. Contact Coach Hamann

January 29, 2022  Pole Mountain Shuffle

Here is to one week on snow and some good practices.  Who would have predicted this crazy weather ad closed roads and all.

We have a busy week ahead of us.  Practices and our first meet, The Laramie Invite.  Please watch for info specific to the Invite in another mailing.

I have had some interesting conversations with some of our ski team members this past week.  Some say they do not want to race this race because it is a Classic (Non-Skating event).  I understand having a preference in techniques etc.  If your skier has a desire to Nordic Ski in high school, there is no choice.  A high school meet has both skating and classic involved and skiers have to be able to do both.  It is the Middle School season where we learn both skills. With that said I hope all skiers will decide to give this race a try. There are distances for both experienced and novice skiers.  Skiers with only skate skis will be waxed for classic skiing.  And expected to use the classic technique.  Skating in a Classic Race is disqualification.

Parents- we still have space for you to help with our meet.

A note from Transportation- starting this Monday -masks or face coverings will be required while riding an activity  or sport bus. All skiers will need a mask while on the bus to and from practice.  Please plan according and put a mask in with your ski gear.

Attached is an order blank for scout Nordic T-shirts and beanies, the date on the order blank says due the  10th but we are extending this to next Friday the 14th.  These shirts run large.

There are a select pairs of LMS Lightning tights left.  They are 35$  sizes Adult Sm and Adult Med.

First come first serve. Checks to Fancy Pant. Let Coach Hamann know if you want a pair.

Middle School Championships Here We Come!

WOW!  The Lander trip was the day that never ended!  Your skiers did very well in those very trying times!  They skied very well as well!

This Saturday, February 13,  is the last race of the season.  Casper Mountain here we come! I don't see any major weather events to get in our way of getting there and back in good time. Watch for more info but we should expect to load at 7Am and be on the road by 7:30AM .  Race info has our start at NOON.  We will stop and let your kiddos get fast food in Casper before heading home.  We can expect to be home before 6PM! (Pray all goes as planned and we don't have to drive across the state to get home!)   Please prepare yourselves for the longer race if you do race! All on our team are welcome to go and compete.  We will not be signing up for the short race.  You all can ski the longer race easily.

Practice this week!  With early release of students on Friday.  Our practice schedule for our last week will be modified!

Monday/Tuesday:  Same thing as usual.  Bring your skis you plan on racing on.

Wednesday:  Practice for all.  We have 2 busses.  We will stop and get you if you usually practice on Thursday.   Take your equipment home if you are not going to the race.

Thursday:  Ski prep for those going to Casper.  At the shed.  Done by 5.  You are free to go home when you are done.

This has been a great, crazy, low snow ski season.  Please continue to ski.  See you next year either as a Scout or when you are skiing as a Plainsman!

 Week of February 6, 2021

We had a great home meet.  Thank you parents  for your help and skiers for your effort on the trails.

Now on to this week. Practices will be the same as usual.  Skiers choice for technique.

Friday we prep skis in town.  Again this is encouraged that you come.  Those that worked on skis had better performing equipment this past meet.

February 6, 2021  Beaver Creek (Lander)

This is a very long day.  Load the bus at 7:00AM and  home around 8:00PM.  Ski at Beaver Creek Nordic Area on South Pass.

Because it is such a long day, it is encouraged that all traveling to compete should ski the long race.  The Novice race is only a very short course easy course and should be only considered for a few on our team.

All skiers on the team are welcome to travel.

Parents please talk with  your skiers.  Are they willing to spend a day on a bus in order to race?  Are they willing to spend the entire time in mask.  We as coaches have had many conversations with skiers about masks.  We need to know that they will be worn as ACSD1 protocol says.

If you are planning on transporting your skier personally you need to contact Mrs. Burkhart (kburkhart@acsd1.org) She has paperwork for you to sign.

Please be watching for more in for this meet later in the week.

OPPORTUNITY FOR 8TH GRADERS

January 29, 2021

Special Olympics needs your help

12noon -3pm

We will be helping host a Special Olympic Winter Games.  Middle School Skiers will be setting up the course, timing and handing our awards.

Please talk to Coach Hamann if you think you might be able to help.  As of now this will be at a Park in Town.  We may have to move the venue to the ski trails.

___________________________________________________________________________________

A Note From Coach Hamann

With only 3 weeks of skiing to go and many kilometers of trails under our belts, our skiers are growing in their ability to Nordic Ski.  With this experience comes the joy of favorite trails and the ug of not so favorite trails.

It is our job as a coaching staff to push you a s skiers. To help you grow, to make you faster.  Sometimes this means drills and short intervals, sometimes it means going longer and pushing to be at the bus on time. sometimes it means trying a scary downhill or getting up that ugly up hill.  This is what Nordic Skiing is about.

Team members you are given 4 choices every day as to how and who you want to ski with.  We coaches understand  you have different energy levels every day.  Once you  have made your ski group choice for the day we expect you to ski with that group. The coach at that time has ultimate say so over what is going to be done  for that day. Remember is is our job to help you become a better skier. Your job is to be a team member.

With this said.  We expect skiers to behave like  LMS Scouts.. You represent yourself, your family and this sport at all times while on the trails, either at home or at away venues. Those that choose to throw fits, argue with other skiers and even argue with coaches will not be asked to travel.

The hidden part of being on any team is learning how to deal with life when it does not go your way.

January 18-22, 2021

We got good work done last week.  Some of us experienced skate skis for the first time, others got some really good distance under our belts!

This week is a short week for skiing.

Monday/Tuesday (18 &19) No school/No Practice

Wednesday/Thursday (20 &21) Classic skis please.  Be prepared to work hard.

Friday (22) Practice is optional but we are going to the ski trails!  I want to make sure we all have an opportunity to ski at least 2 times this week.  Home at 5:30.  We have 2 busses so the entire team is invited.  Skate if you want. We will check in skiers at the normal place and time. (3PMish)

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Our next attempt at a home meet will be January 30, 2021.  With snow conditions as they are I am hopeful we can get trails groomed and tracked.  Hopefully other teams will join us!  Please watch for a sign up for helping out!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Order forms for t-shirts were sent out via email last week.  If you did not get one and want to order please contact Coach Hamann. This order will be sent to the company Thursday after practice.

Team Tights are available thru Coach Hamann.

LMS or Coaches do not make money on these purchases.

Calling all 8th Graders! Friday, January 29, 2021 (Noon to 2:30) We have been asked to help with the Laramie Community Special Olympics.  We will be putting the course together, timing the events, cheering local Special Athletes and maybe jumping into relays if needed.  This is not an official LMS event but it is a way to give a little to our community.  Please see Coach Hamann if you are interested.

(If no  snow in town we will move this event to the Happy Jack Trails)

You will be done in time to wax your skis and get ready for the race on Saturday!

Sunday, January 10, 2021

We finally got to Happy Jack and skied last week.  Snow conditions are still minimal at best even with this new snow recently.  It makes my heart happy to see kids learning to ski, having fun and becoming racers!

This week January 11-15 looks like this:

Monday/Tuesday: CLASSIC SKI come ready to work hard.

Tuesday/Thursday:  SKATE DAY You saw that right! Time to break out the skate skis! If you have only one pair of skis or are still unsteady on skis, stay with your classic skis! This will be an easier technique day.

Friday: Practice is in town.  At Scout Field.  If snow we ski if not we run.  Come dressed out to work out.  Done at 5PM.

Thanks to all of you who skied in out time trial.  For results look herehttps://www.webscorer.com/race?raceid=230741&live=1

Our next meet will he in Laramie on January 30, 2021.  We will need help and snow!

Remember to bring your skis to school the first day you practice.  If you plan on skating  this week pack those as well.  Remember to pack hats, gloves and snacks for practices.

                                Week 2  (12-14-20 to 12-18-20)

Yea for a bit of snow and colder temperatures!

Practices this week will be  held at Scout Park. We will be finished every day  by 5PM.

Our on trail practices will start after the break.

Dress for cold!  The park can be windy.  We have no shelter!

School district too cold to practice limit is below at 0 degrees.  This includes windchill.  If we have to cancel practice it will be announced at noon  on that day.

Monday/Tuesday

Bring skis to school . The shed will be open before school. Put your ski boots in your locker in the school.

Ski at the park.  Getting to know my skis, learning basic technique.  Putting a little distance on our legs.

Wednesday/Thursday

Ski if there is snow.  Be prepared to run if  the snow is worn out.  Bring your running shoes for just in case.

Friday

We understand if you cannot make it to practice. Please come if you can.  We will be working out not waxing .  Ski or run depending on the amount of snow etc.  Plan for this!

Things we are dealing with this year.

1. Masks  must be worn during practice.  With the cold air etc. they get wet.  You might want to consider bringing a spare mask.

2. For those of us with glasses... masks are a big pain in the fogged up face.  Does anybody have a solution to glasses fogging?  Also, like me the skiers have been taking off their glasses and putting them in a pocket.  This is not a good solution. In 2 days of practice we have lost 2 pair of glasses.  Parents please talk to your skier find a solution that works for you as to what to do with glasses.

3. Skiers are discovering that skiing is thirsty work.  Please bring a water bottle to practice.

4. Snacks are important.  Bring a snack that can be easily eaten during that time of check in and getting your equipment.

5. Ski practice days are pretty much not changeable.  Why?  Starting after the break we will be riding the bus to Happy Jack.  There is only space for a finite amount of skiers and coaches on the bus.  (Transportation/COVID policies).  Parents cannot drive their skiers to the trails because ACSD 1 requires a health check in before getting on the bus.

6. For skiers looking for more ski days.  There is a club ski team in town.  WHAT (Wyoming High Altitude Training)  It is race focused and as with all other clubs there is a fee.  (Contact: Dan@WHATTEAM.org)

7. Parents, if you have not done so.. Send in your  Coach Hamann (chamann63@gmail.com) your email  address to get on the main email chain.  We have a remind group as well.  Like the Scout Nordic facebook .

8. We will have no formal required  practices during the break.

Coach Hamann

Welcome to the 20-21 Season of the Scout Nordic Ski Team!

This Blog Space is a place to find vital information about practices, meets and the general going on of the ski team.  Since COVID and all we will try to use this more and paper notices less.

Important info:

1. You must  complete the online sign up before we can allow you to practice.

2. You must have all your "paperwork" turned in before you can practice with us.

3. If  you have not figured out your equipment (Skis, boots, poles), you might be out of luck.  Equipment is very limited in town at Basecamp.

Practice Dates and Times:

Skiers are expected to practice on the days they actually attend school.  (Monday/Wednesday or Tuesday/Thursday ) All skiers are welcome to Friday practices.  Homeschool, Online, Lab School, SRA, any other type of school I missed, you will practice on Tuesday/Thursday.

All skiers practicing that day will check in at LMS.  All are required to have a temperature check and go through the COVID questions asked of them before they came to school that day.  (Administered  by a coach not at home.) Kids with high temps and not feeling well will be asked to go home and not practice.

Because of COVID protocols and how we have to check in skiers this year, there will be no skiers allowed to meet us at practice or jump into a practice at Happy Jack.

Post 8 Week of February 3-7, 2020

Toni and me 2019.  Please send me new pictures!
Casper was a great success.  The flu kept a few skiers home.  We are hoping all are well and ready for Lander in 2 weeks.

I am super proud of the entire team.  Some skied very fast, some stretched themselves and skied the longer race, some skated a race for the first time!

Here is our plan for this week;

MONDAY THROUGH THURSDAY we ski at Happy Jack.  Skate skis if you have them, if you don't come anyway.

FRIDAY NO PRACTICE.  No meet on Saturday to wax for.  There is no gym space for indoor practice.  We all could use a day to get grades up etc.

---------------------------
As we have only a handful of practices left this season.  Please come to as many as you can.  With kids struggling in classes and the flu we have had lower numbers of skiers on the bus than usual.  Again if you can come, we invite you to ski every day we have practice these last two weeks.
-------------------------

Lander February 15, 2020
As soon as I get info I will get it to you.

----------------------------
Watch for the date of our end of season celebration.
----------------------------
As our season ends we need to thank our volunteers.  There has been some REMIND discussion of how to do this.  It was decided a collection of money would be great.  Then gift cards would be bought with that money.    This project is a free will project.  Parents please do not feel obligated.

Is there a parent willing to take this project on? Coaches are not to handle money.

Antelope Butte Classic

There will be specific info to the travel team by Wednesday.

Travel team for Sheridan was posted.  Here it is again.  (This is the only time we limit racers. Every other race open for any interested Scout Skier!)

When deciding this team, we took in consideration 4 important things. 1) Time Trial participation and times, 2) Amount of practices participated in. 3) Attitude at practice and 4) bus behavior just from town to the hill and back.  This is a long trip on a crowded bus. A venue we have never skied at before and a large field of skiers.

For this week only!  This list of skiers is encouraged to ski at least 3 days this week and Friday wax day is Mandatory!

Here is our team:

Girls:
1.       Caroline Bredhoft
2.       Rowan Taff
3.       Nadia Field
4.       Alexa Nashgold
5.       Maddie Schneider
6.       Laura Brand
7.       Eliza Fay
8.       Zeren Homer
9.       Colleen Somerfeld
10.   Maggie Miller

Boys:
1.       Darin Binnning
2.       Eli Jones
3.       Giddeon Moore
4.       T.J. Nunnaly
5.       Jack Voos
6.       Colby Blumel
7.       Sawyer Conklin
8.       Ryan Dennis
9.       Matthew Pikal
10.   Asa Smith
11.   Nathan Soule
12.   Ezra Visser
13.   Fischer Frude
14.   Jed Duncan
